JXL files cannot yet be used directly on the web in 2026: Only Safari displays them natively; Chrome and Firefox have the decoder built in, but it's still hidden behind a feature flag. WEBP is the most modern option with the broadest support. Unlike JPG, WebP also supports transparency and animations, and the files are noticeably smaller for comparable quality. Compared to PNG, WebP saves considerable file size, albeit with slight compression losses that are barely noticeable in practice. WebP is therefore the best compromise between file size, quality, and compatibility when the goal is web use.
